Learn more about José A. Luis’ approach in choreography, collaborative process, and class structure.

I try to understand the complexities of being human through dance. As a primary solo dancer/choreographer in sync, I diligently invest time to understand who I am, what my patterns are, and what boundaries are present (or not). Through this self-reflective lens, my work reaches beyond its limitation of one body to continuously investigate our potential to think, feel, or act beyond what we know—while leaving room for the unknown. Within this scope I weave my voice with collaborators (musicians, photographers, dancers, etc.) to explore an individualistic experience with the stories of a collective through voice, movement, silence, intention, and dynamics. In solo work, I accept and/or push against the uphill of reinventing, reflecting, and reemerging as an artist. The spectrum of my work emerges from being an individual among a community navigating the complexity of the human condition.

Choreography

A piece begins from my experiences. Either in the present, past, or future desires. In choosing to work with other dancers, I frame what I know and wish to convey with how the ensemble can support, parallel, or intercept the message with their own voice. In decision making, I consider the space. How does the space want to shift, hold, or remain with a body in space? Is it in harmony or tension with the individual? I witness occurrences in these familiar spaces through performance or daily life and decide what my trace can be. This extends to how I imagine the audience seating, witnessing, or participating (consciously or subconsciously). Is the narrative clear or do I leave breadcrumbs for them to create and question their own relation to what I offer? My work develops as I continue to navigate daily life. In this same spectrum, I consider my relation to dance and how I evolve with it.

The process of sharing, trouble-shooting, and co-creating a piece is unique in every instance and important to my learning. I understand my voice as a movement generator while leaving space for a collaborator’s perspective to inform new ideas. Creating movement to coexist in an aural world, moving the body in a way as to be seen via a lens, or conversations for the end-goal of a piece are all moments of the collaboration process which heightens artistic growth for those involved. Not everything runs smoothly. Sometimes we are all on the same page. Still hyper aware of our individual experiences inside and outside of the work, I aim to respect the dynamics of the relationship as a collaborator.

Movement
Striving for personal and artistic growth in sync, I approach movement as a learning moment. My practice consist of an internal to external frame related to mind, body, and soul. A check-in process for awareness, an anatomical series of body functionality, and a virtuoso phrase work for a holistic placement of oneself in the environment.

Making
Staying true to a holistic goal, these movement making explorations are seeds for continual work. We take time to see, hear, and feel our surroundings and stay open to our own shifts in response. We let ourselves be guided by curiosity and speculations which are often avoided. Writing takes place at any moment as needed, and an invitation to share or witness is always offered in these movement making sessions.
