Emerging from my experiences in residencies, career thus far, and search for different layers on this primary solo journey I offered “Solo Perspectives”. A residency at MOVO supported with a stipend, documentation, and sharing of their dialogue with a solo practice. With a reserved call extending three weeks, I received nine applicants sharing their personable, vulnerable, open hearted inquiries on where they are in this stage of their artistry and life. When applying for the grant* to support this program, funds were set aside for a panel should there be a lot of applicants. Yet, within this pool I felt prepared to make the decisions myself and select the two primary artists. Without a panel I was able to offset those funds to select a third artist, providing a redacted version of the residency. Ultimately, these nine applicants showed me the continual importance of the solo practice in all its forms. I only hope to expand this opportunity with further funding. Fingers crossed. Until then, I am pleased to announce the participants.

Dienae “D” Hunter (they/them) is a performance artist that recently transplanted to Minneapolis from the greater Phoenix area in Arizona. In Arizona they performed with several local dance and dance theater collectives including SM2 Dance, Cruz Control Collective, JAMovement, and Grey Box Collective. As well as working as a performer, D directed and presented their own work ranging from solo performances, collaborative, interdisciplinary shows, and dance theater productions. Since moving to Minneapolis, D has had the opportunity to perform in Arena Dance’s Candy Box Dance Festival and is looking forward to performing in the 2023 Minneapolis Fringe Festival this summer. |

Río Saúl is an emerging rural trans artist from Salinas, CA who recently relocated to Minneapolis, Mni Sota Makoce. After graduating from the University of California, Santa Cruz, they performed with Gerald Casel Dance as part of the first annual BBQueer Dance Festival in Santa Cruz, California. Río has researched the artistic practices of local migrant trans Latina performers in their hometown Salinas and has taught dance in public schools with the Arts Council for Monterey County. In 2020, they were awarded the Local Emerging Artist Grant from the Arts Council for Monterey County to present transoils, borderless bodies, a work-in-progress shown at the bay area Queering Dance Festival 2020. Río Saúl also works as a caregiver and is an aspiring death doula. Rio is interested in community autonomy, and is currently exploring the relationship between geography, map-making, migration/movement, and embodiments of gender. |

Noelle Awadallah نوال is a Palestinian American dancer, choreographer, improviser, and teacher who resides in Mni Sota Makoce (Minneapolis, MN). Since 2019 she has performed and trained with Ananya Dance Theatre. She dances with Laura Osterhaus Rosenstone’s, Slo Dance Company. She is the Co-Artistic Director of Body Watani Dance (body-as-homeland) project/practice in collaboration with Leila Awadallah. Body Watani is an improvisational movement practice and a space for experimental Arabic-rooted dance research developed by Leila Awadallah in collaboration with Noelle Awadallah. Her personal research is rooted in an improvisational movement practice that is framed by her blurry identity in all of its honesty and dislocation. Constantly curious, and currently investigating future building through radical imagination of the senses, sacred play, ancestors as imagination, and memory puzzles. She holds a BFA from Columbia College Chicago (2018). |

In the next couple of months they will have access to space, meet with each other for reflections, and later in this fall hold space together for a public sharing of their experience. Either in dance, dialogue, or some to be determined manner. More on that later on.
