This work began with the question of power. I wanted to address a brown voice leading white ones (a three member band, two dancers, a predominant white community). I was curious about a band’s presence, a dancer within a choreographer’s vision, and intrigued of someone entering from outside our state lines to redefine our role and definition of “community”. As the visionary of this work holding responsibility, I also risk from surrendering. How much do I control vs how much do I let go? I balance the dreaming of this job with the direction needed from me to lead.

This begins with how I know my career thus far to be; a solo. A duet occurs, and is witnessed. The band premieres a new song co-written together. A solo ends. We offer, hold, and balance power.

My work is informed by personal experiences. As I expand from solo processes (or one on one collaborations), I found permission to let this work be part one in the investigation of power dynamics. Seth, Dustin, Lola, Doug, Steven are their own person experiencing as we move together. I fear, excite, lean, and guide this work fueled by the energy of these growing relationships. What roles are we willing to fulfill in order to support and arrive together? This piece is me attempting to grow artistically through constant reminder of who I strive to be personally — an individual navigating life with others.
